Avery:

Welcome to really important visual things does Yellowjackets buzz buzz bows. My name is Amy.

Rosey:

And I'm Rosie and this week we are looking at episode six called st the yellow jackets tangle with the birds and the bees navigating love less and DIY surgery in the present black male bunnies and an icy reunion Misty prepares for a surprise house.

Avery:

I love how like cheerful boys

Rosey:

are so dark

Avery:

everything DIY surgery

Rosey:

it's so funny because as I said that I mean it like the seem like flashed in my mind, but just so horrific, and we'll get to it.

Avery:

And I'm sick mostly not the Rona. So no one get that worried for me. I'm recording from home. So might sound a little different this week. But don't worry, I'll be back. We are going to be talking about spoilers for the whole season. So proceed with caution.

Rosey:

So here we go. I read a thing that says you have to follow follows a character like yeah, Natalie episode on a Shawn episode. And I feel like if we had to pick this as a Lottie episode, at least in 1906. Yeah, I don't know it's hard to pick. We a lot of them are tasty.

Avery:

Yeah, I don't really agree with that like Bass Pro.

Rosey:

We kick off with Lottie and I will say I wrote down. Lahti has real senses, and I believe in them, do you?

Avery:

I do well. Okay, so I have been believing in them. But rewatching it I was like, I see an argument for mental illness. Okay. Because in the car before she freaks out, they make a really they make a point to mix the sound so that you hear the radio saying really scary things. Really? Yeah, I didn't know the right is talking about the economy tanking. And like the environment being really fucked up. And like, ah, it gets louder. And so that

Rosey:

could be like getting in her subconscious. She's having a panic attack, or something like that. Maybe. I mean, I don't know, I could see an argument for either even a bit of both.

Avery:

Yeah. I mean, it doesn't really square with the fact that she's having literal premonitions. Yeah.

Rosey:

So So I mean, like visions. I mean, I guess Yeah, almost all of them end up being premonitions, but I thought it was interesting. Starting with her as a little kid. We hadn't seen anybody else's a little kid. So that also fell intentionally to be like this has been going on. This is not brand new for her all of a sudden. And if her dad made her see a psychiatrist right away, then she's been on medication for quite a while, it seems. And her dad also says, like, we can't keep going on like this. And then I was like, How old is she supposed to be? So is this been going on? Like how old do you think she wasn't? That seemed like eight nine must have been going on since she was five or six. If he used the word like this has been going on for so long. Then when the issue is showing, we're still with Lottie and then we're back in 1996. I did like that. She snapped back at March. I think that was Mary Wright, who was like teasing her for her visions or being dramatic. I felt like we had really watched her beat up that way. Yeah.

Avery:

Yeah, her install was so funny to about her Marian dating her cousin. And then I like them second cousin, and it's legal. That's exactly

Rosey:

what I was gonna say. As long as he's like walking away love that. You hear that line in the background? Those moments just remind you like these are just teenage girls. Yeah. And I like I think they do a good job like throwing that in to remind us. Yeah, of that. Like they are not built for this.

Avery:

No, they can't even function in like regular society. I think Lottie was so well tasked because I like her. Consistently always like her. Yeah, when she's doing like scary, weird things.

Rosey:

I agree. I totally agree. And then I mean, she sees the deer with the bloody antlers. I'm always interested to hear your thoughts on imagery. How did you feel about seeing the antlers?

Avery:

I feel like it was just like a doom premonition. Like because then in the later that's when they hunt, they get the deer that has the bugs in it and so I feel like it was just a way of externalizing that without showing exactly what's going to happen later. Yeah, does it also have the things on it? Yes, or just the bloody shedding

Rosey:

antlers I wrote Lottie thiese a deer with bloody antlers. What do antlers mean? Why is she seeing them? Is this a bad omen?

Avery:

It's interesting. I wonder if antlers have actual symbolism?

Rosey:

Yeah, I don't know. That's a good point. Yeah. And then later the coach says that like antler shed, which I definitely didn't know, very quick

Avery:

Google. Who knows where this comes from? Like a crown the antlers grow beyond its body, bringing it closer to the sky and making it sacred. In many cultures, the deer is a symbol of spiritual authority. She's a healer queen. Yeah. During a deer's life they antlers fall off and grow again. And the animal is also a symbol of regeneration. Interesting. So maybe it's like the spirit of the woods regenerating through Lahti? Yeah.

Rosey:

That feels a little like what could be happening.

Avery:

So you've spooky stuff. Do you ever like wake up and Google your dream symbolism?

Rosey:

No, because I'm afraid they'll freak me out.

Avery:

They do freak me out and I do it all the time. Last night, I dreamed that I was swimming and I lost my ring of keys like I watched Oh no. It was scary.

Rosey:

I also liked that van was sweet to Lottie because I feel like we don't see van being sweet. Often because of Jackie's around van is not sweet.

Avery:

No, he is salty,

Rosey:

salty, sometimes van obviously, she's sweet around Tisa, which we get some cute moments of them later in the episode, but

Avery:

I wrote Oh, right. The postcard is from Jess, because I remember that whole thing where I was like, Who's this postcard?

Rosey:

Yeah, it turns out it's from Jeff. Yeah. So because right before that scene, I also like Shawna sometimes has so much chill and other times is no chill. And I felt like it was so funny. She could like come up with a quick, calm lie for Randy, like standing in the motel parking lot. She was like, Oh, um, yeah. Oh, well, there's book club, you know, around the corner. And I was like, girl, what's happening right now? I guess she just found out Travis died. So she's like, not feeling calm. But that whole scene was interesting. And then yes, the postcard. I had the same thought.

Avery:

Yeah. The other thing I was thinking about is that night, he says that he has to go into the store, right? Yes, yeah. And then we find out later that he's in planning the black male with Randy right. So I was like, Is he also there?

Rosey:

Oh, damn, that would be that. Yeah, you could be he totally could be. If that's true, Randy was his car. Randy was much quicker on his feet. If that's the case,

Avery:

maybe it was maybe Randy has hidden debts. Maybe.

Rosey:

Honestly. Me too. I just I liked when they're all together as adult. I just like when the women are all together at any time. But now that they're finally together as adults, you're like, yay.

Avery:

All is right with the world.

Rosey:

Exactly. Even when they're like kind of yelling at each other. And I love going. That goes. I don't like it when you yell at me. Like, I don't know, there's such I mean, it's like a sister vibes with.

Avery:

Yeah, they have an intimacy that they don't have with anybody else. Yeah, life's

Rosey:

no 100%. Like Shawna walks in. And when's the last time she's shown that and she's like, Hi. So what's up? What's it? Like, it's not, it's not like a lovey dovey energy with any of them.

Avery:

I wonder how much they know about their characters. I read a thing with Melanie lynskey, where she says the writers have five seasons worth of material. That

Rosey:

makes sense to me. Like this could go on for even longer, but five is probably good because as we've said, in other episodes we've made and go

Avery:

with your plan. Yeah, especially this

Rosey:

Why does why or how does how used to have so much money just because like what was your lawyers? She's a lawyer. Okay. Okay. I think lawyers, they make money. No, that makes sense. Yeah. Because I feel like all we've done is watch her run for office. So I kept being like, what do you do and how come? It's 50k? And they're like, can you get and she's like, Yeah, that's a lot of money. Just feel really Yeah, no problem.

Avery:

I'll pick them up really fast. I think it's so interesting. Oshana engages with like, their whole family engages. They're all just like Jeff is blackmailing her. And Callie is stealing her costume. Yeah, like Porsche Ana.

Rosey:

Well, Sean is not yes, Porsche on up but she's not a present loving person to either of them.

Avery:

No, that's true. But it just sounds like she's getting taken advantage of.

Rosey:

Yeah, that's true. I mean, she's blackmailing her daughter or by not blackmailing she's I don't even

Avery:

know it. Yeah, but only made sense. Her daughter's a dead

Rosey:

daughter did it first. I guess. Being very dysfunctional. I agree with you. I mean, okay, we intercut to this throughout the whole episode, but this brunch. Why? Why is this brunch happening? Like, I know why. It's Jackie's 40th birthday, and they're remembering her. But I don't it was bizarre to me. I felt like all those interactions were super bizarre like there's no other family that Jackie has that those pair Aren't you want to be with or do you think it's like Jackie was with you and when she was last, so that's the connection.

Avery:

I feel like Shauna is the standard for Jackie like she's the best that they're gonna get the closest they're ever gonna get her again. And she's woefully inadequate. Which is why they just shut on her console

Rosey:

all time. And then I mean, they probably thought Jeff was going to be their son in law. So exactly they are like literally just playing out this. Yeah, yeah.

Avery:

I read on Reddit. Someone's talking about how the mom is the way she speaks to Shana is the same way Jackie speaks to Shana. So like Jackie clearly learned her habits from her mom.

Rosey:

Yeah, yeah. In writing. I had the same thought. And then Shawn has big dream of giving birth to her rotisserie chicken.

Avery:

So do you think that that's foreshadowing that they eat the baby? Or do you just think that she's really hungry? Because in the next scene, she's just hungry?

Rosey:

I had the exact same question. I don't know maybe both. i The other thing I didn't pick up on the first time is they say I think it's Jackie says, just like his father or something beautiful just like his father and it was a chicken so that was also weird. I was like, is this like Jeff's to chicken? Or again? Is this just that's the thing you'd say when someone has a baby and it's not that deep?

Avery:

Yeah, I mean, it could just be her fear that Jack is gonna find out right or maybe Jeff is chicken shed like yeah, Haley his wife.

Rosey:

Oh, who knows? But yeah, I mean, they are they are so hungry. These poor girls. real hungry, really hungry and I can't remember like, you know it because well, she has a stream and she's clearly panicking. THE FUCK OUT about being pregnant, but like Shawna needs, they all need food. But she only needs food like this is very low. Yeah, she's eating for two. Oh, God, they can't even get like the squirrels. I liked when Jackie literally said like, I would kill the rabbit. What even is a rabbit? A squirrel was a pompom on its ass. And China's like, What the fuck? Are you talking? not making any sense. They're starting to go a little.

Avery:

Definitely. And then we get man and chase and being cute. And yeah, that went line from Dan, where she says you always when? And tastes. It says why don't you think I like to play which is like such an encapsulation of her whole personality. Yep.

Rosey:

I completely agree. Also, just unlike the note of them being together, because they also are kind of in that moment, Van says like, they're gonna find out eventually. And she's like, I just don't want the drama. Do you think this team I guess two questions. Do you think anyone knows or senses it? And do you think they'd care? I keep having to remind myself and everyone

Avery:

knows except Jackie. Jackie knows, but would be shitty about it. She probably wouldn't be sure about it. I think when they come out a couple of them are like it. Are they together and then a couple other people are like yeah,

Rosey:

right. Yeah. Yeah. Because I feel like you can pick up on well, probably exactly that some people would and some people would not, but I didn't. I mean I can only have understand or not really at all understand taste is feeling or the fear around any of that. But I was watching it being having to remind myself It wasn't 2022 Because I was like what give a shit about this, but it was 90 sec so yeah,

Avery:

it will be waiting here. Yeah, people really cared when we were in high school. Yeah, that's true. Like an all female team finding out there to lesbians and amongst them

Rosey:

Yeah, yeah. Now I am placing us in high school and that would have been big news. The very least it would have been news not just like okay, right. It would have been an event Yeah,

Avery:

drama drama. I wrote aren't their boobs called outside water is called submerged which makes it

Rosey:

I mean I guess it was so they could do their cute like riding on each other's backs game but yeah, I kept getting

Avery:

underwater.

Rosey:

I kept wanting to like dunk down Yeah, I agree. I also think cases right? I don't know that it was it's handled well or whatever. But I think they had to leave where they were and explore if there was help they could find somewhere else.

Avery:

I totally agree. Yeah, when she was like Winter's coming we have nothing to eat the only way that we're gonna get out of this is if we find a way to get out of it. I was like, That makes a lot of sense. Give her the compass Yeah, go with

Rosey:

Yeah, don't go totally alone. Which is obviously the next episode is that exploration but yeah, when she was like you're gonna die out there and she was like, whoa, I'm we're like for sure gonna die here. So we can at least try.

Avery:

I thought it was cool. This is going back to Sean Jackie conversation where Jackie was like, Did I tell you that he said I love you the day before we left? The remember he said it like when they were having sex. Yeah. Or hooking up and it was like, I fucking love you. But then the way he says I love you. It's Shauna, where she says, Just say you love me. You don't have to mean it is like I love you Shona. Like, I don't know where you're watching him. Like, I really want to know. I don't understand Jeff's feelings. I feel like he was in love with her in high school. Shona.

Rosey:

Oh, yeah, I think so. I think I love her the whole time. I want yeah, that's definitely how I'm watching. I think he was like with Jackie and didn't know how and like, probably enjoyed. I mean, she's like, a light like, I'm sure he enjoyed being around her especially as like a teenage boy like, fun energy party vibes. But I don't know I think he's been in love with Shana the whole time. Well, the brunch comes up soon and like that, he's, I guess, Does he stand up for her later he stands up for her at one point like during that and basically it's like she got into brown which happened a long time ago. Like a most of the things he lists out happened, then, in addition to this, sure, my next point is about like, the way they were showing teen pregnancy fear basically like it was such an interesting way to show it that she had that dream and then it's just like, What the hell am I going to do? And she obviously has Sean has like such heightened I mean, it's heightened scenario that yeah, what Miss you quickly school, deliver your baby in the woods, but I think that is a feeling a lot of people probably but teens specifically feel like what the fuck am I going to do? Now that this has happened to me? And I liked how they showed it.

Avery:

It's a nice pair with how they show Travis's anxiety about losing his virginity. Yeah, I think they did a good job deal. Yeah. Yeah. When they come back from hooking up and Jackie's all pissed, saying they should have been a day. I'm gonna Jackie side. What are you doing? You're just going to hook it up for an hour like you're supposed to be hunting.

Rosey:

I completely agree. I also think they're hooking up for longer than an hour. I also think weird there. They've picked the plane. I don't know. Anyway, but like you could you could I mean, these are big woods. They could have found some other privacy cute area to hook up. Like, I don't think I would have been like there's one scene where she's leaning on a chair that is covered in blood. And Inessa. I mean, they're clearly just like, just associating from that or carpet compartmentalizing it, but I would not be in that plane.

Avery:

Once again. Trauma bonds. Yeah, they're just like

Rosey:

intensifying the entire thing. The next scene is this more of the brunch. But I the fact that Jackie's mom said Jackie was such a generous person. I was like, what I mean, that is probably how she viewed her daughter or it's out now how she views her because she's lost her but she was many things. She was not generous.

Avery:

I wrote down an all caps, tuna quiche the grossest thing ever.

Rosey:

Also, to to quiche and orange juice. Yeah,

Avery:

it was all horrible. This is the best tuna quiche I've ever had. Yeah, cuz it's fucking gross. Who's ever had a good tuna quiche?

Rosey:

Who's ever had another tuna quiche? Where else are we eating this? Do you think they go there all the time? Or this is just the birthday? Like once a year?

Avery:

I think you'd probably go there like a few a few times a year.

Rosey:

And do you think Jack Shawn is just like, I'll just withstand this because you lost your daughter and I'll sit through it.

Avery:

I think she still has so much inferiority complex and guilt. When they have their conversation in the car on the way back. I was thinking about it. And I feel like the first time I was watching it again, I was like, Oh, they're not a good fit. And watching it this time. I'm like, this would have happened to any couple. They've been together for 20 years. Should just ages they've been together for 20 years and one of them has had PTSD the whole time. Right the whole time.

Rosey:

Yeah, aside from whatever the few months before she got on the plane in which during which time it was like a secret and not a safe relationship. So it stills Yeah, I agree. I also just to jump I think it was right before that when she's like standing in the bedroom Jackie's bedroom 25 years and that bedroom looks like not only has it not been touched with no comment on that, like everyone grieves and handles last differently, but it's like being cleaned like that journal was dust free. Someone is going in and cleaning that room and maintaining it the way it is. Which is was a lot. And then Jackie's ghost or vision or whatever. Saying like it's not your fault. Well, it was but we were kids. Do you think she's talking about her dad? In or the cheating?

Avery:

No, maybe both. Yeah, maybe I thought her death but it makes sense. It'd be both. Yeah.

Rosey:

I thought the death too and then, and then we go to Well, I guess they're not in the car yet but we go to another marital spat with Ty Issa and her wife. I should look up her name. I don't know her name and their Shavon and they're talking about whether or not Sammy needs help like, why? Teresa has such control shoes, because I feel like she commits she like doubles triples down so hard. Like no. Therapy is bad for everyone all the time. It's terrible. It's like, damn, okay. I don't know. It just feels so she's so intense about it so quickly.

Avery:

She doesn't want anyone up in her mind. Yeah, now that I'm thinking about

Rosey:

it. That's it wasn't even about therapy yet. It was just like, she didn't want to admit that Sammy needed help. And like, was struggling at all. So quick. Just no.

Avery:

Well, I wonder subconsciously she's worried that people are gonna find out. It's our fault. Yeah. So my next thing is when that and Kevin go to the soccer room. Did you have other sufferers coach giving

Rosey:

Travis condoms? Oh, yeah, I liked coach doing I thought that scene was very funny. And I think probably the best one was when he hands up the condoms. And Travis goes, weren't we only going to be in Seattle for a week? Who are you seeing? Really quickly the coaches like shut up, just fucking take them please. Like, we can't have a baby. Like he tries to approach it really softly. And then it's like, what are we going to do? And then of course, as a viewer, you're like, someone is pregnant. Oh, yeah. And then And then I met not selling the car and go into the soccer game with

Avery:

a condom. Oh my god. I hate her fucking fishes. I know you like them. I don't like

Rosey:

them. Now. I thought them when that one scene where she was laying in bed. They felt her and now I'm like, why are your fishnets pulled up and on top of a button up shirt.

Avery:

Now that's just smarter than that. I mean, I know. She's like in withdrawal or whatever. Like, but the

Rosey:

into them.

Avery:

Yeah, it's very fucking weird. I think the condom thing is also connected to him being gay. Yeah. Because aids. I agree anxiety. So then they're at a soccer game. And I love the moment where she like gives the little piece of advice. Yeah. And then he scores and she has that like, moment where she gets freaked out. Because she's kind of like seeing what her family or what her family in her life could have been like, she could have been a soccer mom. Yeah, if things were different.

Rosey:

What 100% That's exactly what I thought like memories and what she lost. Or the chance she lost to have that kind of a lamp or even finished the dam. Her own season. Like, I'm sure that she didn't even play again. Like I think it was both.

Avery:

Yeah, the first time I watched it, I was only thinking about her and the second time I was like, Oh, I wonder if she's feeling a little motherly.

Rosey:

That's a good point. That's a really good point. Before we see the soccer game we see Lottie get like called by something out of bed have that moment where the antlers are above her head and then see Ty Issa like going ham on some dirt.

Avery:

A nerd eaten dirt hosing dirt,

Rosey:

so intensely, and looks like I mean, this is a whole conversation like she doesn't know she's doing it we later find out and like they foreshadowed earlier in the episode when her nails are all crusty rusty gross.

Avery:

Like a lady.

Rosey:

Yeah. Do you think that literally is like she's hungry? And her sleepwalking self is doing that and that's it, or is it something else?

Avery:

That didn't occur to me, but yeah, maybe

Rosey:

what did you think it was? Or did you not?

Avery:

I have no questions. Yeah. But it doesn't make sense. So she's just hungry. Yeah, yeah. Bizarre. She's like an animal.

Rosey:

Yeah. And the way she's crouched very animalistic, and then when Lottie confronts her about it I can't do crazy right now Lottie What the actual fuck yeah. And then she runs to Shana in one of she like a variant? The craziest

Avery:

one?

Rosey:

Yeah. 100 Yeah, she really doesn't think so. though.

Avery:

No, which crazy people always think they're not crazy. So I've been one of you.

Rosey:

You don't know when you're in it? No, you know. So then yeah, then we have I mean, I thought it was really interesting and very powerful to have the intercut like Lottie asking Laura Lee and being told visions are a warning or revelation and then seeing Shana go through. I mean, attempting a DIY abortion. Totally agree on the same thoughts. Yeah. And I also wrote down fuck This would hurt so much on every possible level. Like my body was clenching up as I was watching it.

Avery:

Yeah, no good. This is a really nice bonding moment with them. Yeah, I

Rosey:

liked what you said be there for somebody else. Yeah, it was nice. It was nice. And she was very there for Shana. Like her opinion and her agenda were not present. Because she didn't think a DIY abortion was a good idea. And then when she approaches Shana that moment, she's like, What do you need? Like you're not doing this by yourself? So this is what you're doing? I'll follow you again. Shauna is able to control time a little bit the power bottle

Avery:

power bottom. Yeah. Why is Lottie in a sewer?

Rosey:

I don't know. Like her vision down there.

Avery:

Yeah. Do you think it's like the future called smite out?

Rosey:

Maybe I it was like off putting to see her even in that place. Like, just so specific. Yeah, I don't know what it's supposed to be representing. And then her even lighting the candle? Like who? For who? For all of them? What was that? For? I don't know. But I think it was foreshadowing when she then comes to sort of her has her eyes open. And you see you're seeing like Laura Lee on fire is literally on fire.

Avery:

Literally, you're on fire. Yeah. So now we're at Travis. Net. And I loved when they're like, oh, yeah, we're hunting

Rosey:

the deer. I thought that was funny. I thought not fighting back against shame of like, I'm not gonna feel bad about liking sex was very cool. And it said a lot about her character to be having that conversation in 1996. And to say, it's not the 1950s. Whereas now we might say it's not the 90s.

Avery:

Yeah, I mean, I was having that fight in 2007.

Rosey:

Right. That exact conversation. And then yeah, fairly quickly, you can see that that's not really what Travis meant. Like he's feeling insecure about his lack of experience. Yeah, I

Avery:

think it's a really good depiction. I mean, I think that's what was happening here in high school, too. But it was so shaming to me. Yeah, I think so. We just bought we men and women in high school. I feel like unless they're complete pieces of shit, both think that the other gender has more power. Yes. Yes. Like, scared of each other.

Rosey:

And they're both I think a lot of the time they're both feeling shame about whatever choice they are making. Like he's feeling shame that he hasn't had sex. And she's, well she's fighting it but being told by the world's to feel shame that she has had and enjoyed sex.

Avery:

So they're both well, not not as much but Travis is ashamed of being vulnerable. Yeah.

Rosey:

And then we go real quick to miss Aegis, prepping for a kidnap and watching some of her friends have sex.

Avery:

And I loved when she's called Jessica. And Jessica says you call last. And she goes, like, she's so thrilled. Like waiting to hear from her. Yeah,

Rosey:

yeah. She's excited to be involved. She's just she's, she's such a good character. She wasn't in that episode, either. No, she

Avery:

was. I did miss her. And then she keeps kid. Absolutely right.

Rosey:

The only other thing that happens, I think sort of interspersed with that is Shauna and Jeff, and then Jeff's going out to do some more blackmail. Prep. And Shawn us texts, Adam and says, lie on the floor face down. Maybe I'll be there. Maybe I won't. Well.

Avery:

Transitioning to fold.

Rosey:

She's done being the power bottom. Yeah. And then we see Theresa eaten all her dirt again. As an adult.

Avery:

Yeah. And she's she's got that bite on her hand. And originally, I thought she was biting her. Yeah. And now I think it might be the dog because I think she's killed the dog. That's

Rosey:

Ah, wow, I still read it as her eating her own hands. So that makes it makes more sense to me that it's the dog little dog

Avery:

either way, because she can also be like, having a taste for flesh.

Rosey:

That's what I thought that's how I read it. Like she hasn't been able to let go of that. So that's the whole episode. Do you want to do our moment said

Avery:

yes, definitely top three gas or any gas. Gas moments you go first. Mine is Tyson eating dirt and then tell you send the tree. Those are the two ways

Rosey:

that Tyson with dirt times to hay Yeah, agreed. I did not see the kidnapping of Jessica coming and Jeff telling Jackie's parents off. I actually have that for my sweetest moment. Yeah, it's sweet. It is sweet. I wonder if it was bitchy and they say it wasn't because the intention? Yeah, but yeah. What else did you have for sweet? That's it. I had Nat and Travis letting Go off each other's hands It felt very like the I don't know something about it was sweet to me because they did it like together like they clearly had had either a conversation or just an agreement of like when we're in this group we will not I don't know I thought that was very sweet

Avery:

the fact that they're just holding hands at all

Rosey:

yeah like there was walking through the woods with their gun and holding hands.

Avery:

And that's such a big thing I don't I don't know if it was I just felt like holding hands with a boy in high school was like so intimate was

Rosey:

so intimate. It was so romantic it was so the best i loved it i still like holding hands.
